Refractive errors are conditions which disrupt the way light enters and focuses in the eye. Such errors, including astigmatism, myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and presbyopia (age-related farsightedness), can occur at birth or develop with age. These errors typically occur due to abnormalities in the shape of the eyeball, cornea, and/or lens.
Cataracts are common in adults over 40. If they become big enough, they can cause blurry vision and the appearance of halos around bright lights. They occur when the fibers inside a normally clear lens change structure, causing opacity in the lens tissue.
Glaucoma causes progressive vision loss caused by damage to the optic nerve. This is usually correlated with increased inner eye pressure. A loss of peripheral vision is one of the earliest warning signs for glaucoma.
Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)
As we age, the center of our retinas (called the macula) can often become damaged due to one of two main issues:
- Growth of yellow deposits behind the macula (dry AMD)
- Growth of abnormal leaking blood vessels behind the retina (wet AMD)
Progressive blurry vision and hypersensitivity to glare are common symptoms.
Diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of blindness in people with diabetes, a condition in which their bodies cannot properly regulate blood sugar levels. Chronically high levels of blood sugar are highly inflammatory and can damage the small blood vessels behind the retina, leading to retinal damage and scarring.
Also called "lazy eye," amblyopia causes blurry vision due to a developmental problem with brain/eye condition, rather than a physical issue with the eye itself.
Other common pediatric eye care conditions we manage include strabismus (crossed eye) and sports vision.
